Why is mercury thermometer most accurate to measure fever?

Mercury-in-glass thermometers have been considered the most accurate liquid-filled types (Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_thermometer) and therefore used with confidence in home or clinics all over the world. It may be assumed that accurate measurement of fever (body temperature) is vital in deciding correct course of treatment. People who have used mercury fever thermometer ever in their lifetime do not (wouldn't) like to use any other type (read digital thermometer) of thermometer because they have been so used to the accuracy of mercury thermometers.

The governments of few countries have been advocating ban on these mercury filled thermometers because mercury is considered 'toxic' heavy metal and also not good for environment but experts believe that fever thermometers have such a low amount of mercury that even if the thermometer breaks and mercury is spilled over, it rarely pose any danger of any kind. One of the Doctor who still use a mercury fever thermometer once asked me that how many times I have broken or ever seen a broken mercury thermometer and my answer was 'never'. With little care and attention, one can keep these accurate mercury fever thermometers at home for years and years.

Despite being the poorest conductor of heat mercury is still used in thermometers because of the fact that it is the only one metal that remains in liquid state at room temperature and has a high coefficient of expansion. The slightest change in temperature is notable when mercury used in a thermometer. The metal has a shiny appearance and doesn't stick to the glass surface of glass. Also, mercury has a high boiling point which makes it very suitable to measure higher temperatures.

Interlocking Nail that is used to fix the fractures of long bones is an intramedullary nail secured by transverse screws through the proximal and distal fragments. Interlocking Nails are actually a refinement of the original Kuntscher Nail.

Universal Nails are used in Femoral and Tibial fractures the same nail can be used for both right and left legs. Proximal Femoral Nails are intramedullary implants and used to treat unstable Pertrochanteric and Intertrochanteric Femoral fractures. The series include GAMM Nails, PFN and RECON Nails. Intramedullary Supracondylar Nails are used in fixation of comminuted fractures of the Supracondylar regions of the Femur while Humeral Nails Cannulated/Unreamed are used for the fixation of Diaphyseal Shaft & Comminuted Shaft fractures. Narang Medical Limited has introduced Multifix Nails That Can be Used for Both Right and Left Legs. Humans commonly suffer from physical fractures, i.e., breaks of long bones such as the femur, tibia or humerus. Treatment of these fractures often requires surgery to artificially provide support, which is normally provided by an unbroken bone. In order to provide the needed support, metal plates are commonly placed along the exterior of a fractured bone and connected by various means, such as screws which connect with the bone cortical tissue. Other approach include interlocking nail and screw combination. These methods comprise placing a metal nail within the fractured bone medullary canal and locking it in place with transverse pins or screws which also connect with bone cortical tissue. These nails are called Interlocking nails.

NET MULTI-FIX Universal Femoral/Tibial Interlocking Nails are very popular amongst Orthopaedic Surgeons. Same nail can be used for Right and Left leg, therefore less stock is needed. This rigid nail has multiple locking options. Proximal end has - Oblique locking with 6mm locking bolt from Greater to Lesser Trocanter. Optionally a second hole 4.5mm dynamic locking, and third 4.5mm round hole for static locking option. Two distal Lateral to Medial holes and one Anterior to Posterior hole ensure safe fixation.

Interlocking nails without dynamic holes are commonly used while treating fractures of the femoral and tibial shafts, but lacks ability to provide the important contact-compression at the fracture. Thus it take more time in healing of bone. Whereas, MULTIFIX nails proved to have excellently effective not only in treating acute fractures but also in many types of revision surgeries like corrective Osteotomy, stabilization after Pseudarthrosis resection and Arthrodesis.
